Ronophage®
Generic Name: Metformin Hydrochloride
Dosage Form: Coated tablets 1000 mg
Pharmacological Class: Antidiabetic
Indications:
Ronophage® is used for the control of blood sugar in patients with Type 2 Diabetes.
This medication works by:
- Reducing glucose production in the liver
- Decreasing intestinal glucose absorption
- Increasing insulin sensitivity
Ronofage® is also used in the treatment of conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and may aid in weight loss in patients taking antipsychotic drugs.
Indications for Use:
- Prevention and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes
- Treatment of Gestational Diabetes
- Prevention of excessive ovarian stimulation in patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
- Aid in weight reduction following antipsychotic medication use
Dosage Forms:
- Coated tablet 1000 mg
Dosage and Administration:
- Take Ronophage® as prescribed by your doctor. Do not adjust the dosage or the duration of treatment without consulting your doctor.
- Take Ronofage® with a full glass of water, along with meals.
- Do not chew, break, or crush the tablets. Swallow them whole.
Missed Dose:
- If you forget a dose, do not take two doses at once. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose.
Overdose:
- If you take more than the recommended dose, contact your doctor immediately or visit a healthcare facility.
Monitoring During Treatment:
The following should be monitored during treatment with Ronophage®:
- Blood glucose and HbA1c levels
- Glucose and ketone levels in urine
- Liver and kidney function (before starting and during treatment)
- Blood parameters like hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell indices
- Vitamin B12 levels
- Folate levels in cases of megaloblastic anemia
Contraindications:
Ronophage® should not be used in patients with the following conditions:
- History of allergy to metformin or any of the other ingredients
- Severe liver or kidney dysfunction
- Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, or history of diabetic ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Recent administration of iodinated contrast agents for radiological imaging
- Cardiovascular collapse or conditions associated with inadequate oxygen supply
- Severe dehydration
- Conditions such as severe infections, trauma, or surgery
Warnings and Precautions:
- There is a risk of metabolic acidosis (especially in elderly patients, those with a history of alcohol consumption, those needing radiological imaging with contrast agents, patients with significant liver and kidney dysfunction). Symptoms of metabolic acidosis include vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle cramps, fatigue, difficulty breathing, hypothermia, and a slow heart rate. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.
- Use metformin with caution in patients with heart failure. Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart failure.
- Caution is also needed for patients with liver and kidney failure. In some cases, dosage adjustment may be necessary.
- If you need to undergo imaging with contrast agents, inform your doctor about your metformin use.
- If you are under stress due to factors like fever, trauma, or infection, your doctor may stop metformin and switch to insulin.
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is unlikely with metformin alone but can occur when combined with other blood glucose-lowering drugs. Monitor blood sugar closely and consult your doctor if hypoglycemic symptoms occur.
- Long-term metformin use can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Consult your doctor about taking a B12 supplement.
- If you are undergoing surgery, inform your doctor about your metformin use.
Side Effects:
As with all medications, Ronophage® may cause some side effects, though not everyone will experience them. Potential side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal side effects: abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
- Weakness and fatigue
- Headache
Drug Interactions:
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Ronophage® in combination with other medications or supplements.
Packaging:
Each package contains 100 tablets (10 blister packs of 10 tablets each).
Storage Conditions:
- Store at room temperature (below 30°C) away from light and moisture.
- Do not use the drug after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Do not remove the medication from the original packaging before use.
Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
- Metformin may pass through the placenta and could be excreted in breast milk. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor before using this medication.
