Zonisamide®
Generic Name: Zonisamide
Dosage Form: 100 mg Capsules
Pharmacological Class: Antiepileptic Agent
Indications: This medication is primarily used as adjunctive therapy for focal seizures.
Zonisamide is a sulfonamide-derived medication used in combination with other antiepileptic drugs for the treatment of focal seizures.

- Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician, with or without food.
- Do not discontinue treatment without consulting your physician, even if you feel well.
- Capsules should be swallowed whole. Do not crush, chew, or break the capsules.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses simultaneously or an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.
In the event of an overdose, contact your physician immediately.
- Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
- Serum creatinine
- Serum bicarbonate
- Ammonia levels
- Suicidal tendencies, including suicidal ideation, depression, and behavioral changes
- Reduced sweating or increased body temperature, especially during hot weather (particularly in pediatric patients)
- Hypersensitivity to Zonisamide, sulfonamide medications (such as acetazolamide, co-trimoxazole, etc.), or any component of the formulation
- Seek immediate medical attention if signs of an allergic reaction occur, including rash, hives, itching, redness, swelling, blistering, peeling skin (with or without fever), wheezing, chest or throat tightness, difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking, unusual hoarseness, or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
- Zonisamide may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If these effects occur, avoid driving or performing activities requiring mental alertness.
- Consult your physician if you develop skin rash, redness, swelling, blistering, peeling skin, eye redness or irritation, sores in the mouth, throat, nose, or eyes, fever, chills, sore throat, severe fatigue, weakness, unusual bruising, or bleeding.
- Contact your physician if signs of kidney problems occur, such as difficulty urinating or changes in urine output, or if signs of liver dysfunction occur, including dark urine, fatigue, loss of appetite, stomach discomfort or pain, pale stools, vomiting, or jaundice.
- Inform your physician if you experience new or worsening depression, nervousness, agitation, irritability, panic attacks, or other mood and behavioral changes.
- Seek medical attention immediately if suicidal thoughts or behaviors occur.
- During treatment, particularly in hot weather or during physical activity, avoid overheating and drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Notify your physician if symptoms of elevated ammonia levels occur, such as abnormal heart rate or breathing, confusion, pale skin, seizures, sweating, vomiting, or sudden muscle contractions. Also report symptoms suggestive of metabolic acidosis, including confusion, rapid breathing, abnormal heart rhythm, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, excessive drowsiness, shortness of breath, or profound fatigue and weakness.
- If you develop new eye problems such as blurred vision, eye pain, or eye redness, seek immediate medical attention.
- This medication should not be used in children younger than 16 years of age.
Consult your physician or pharmacist before taking Zonisamide during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception throughout treatment and for one month after the last dose of Zonisamide.
Like all medicines, Zonisamide may cause side effects, although not everybody experiences them. Possible adverse reactions include:
- Loss of appetite
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Stomach discomfort
Consult your physician or pharmacist before taking Zonisamide concomitantly with any other medications or dietary supplements.
Each box contains 30 capsules.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Store in a dry place at room temperature.
- The product may be used until the last day of the month indicated as the expiration date on the package.
