Generic Name: Alendronate Sodium
Dosage Form: 70 mg tablet
Drug Class: Bisphosphonates
Indications: Used for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.


Alevance®

Alevance® (Alendronate Sodium) is a bisphosphonate that inhibits bone resorption by osteoclasts, reduces bone cell breakdown, lowers blood calcium and phosphate levels, and increases their excretion from the bloodstream.


Indications

  • Osteoporosis
  • Paget’s disease of bone
  • Prevention of bone loss associated with prostate cancer

Dosage Form

  • Oral tablet: 70 mg

How to Use and Dosage

  • Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not change the dose or duration without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Take once weekly on a specific morning, at least 30 minutes before breakfast, drinks, or other medications.
  • Do not take with tea, coffee, juice, milk, mineral water, or carbonated beverages.
  • Swallow the tablet whole; do not break, chew, or crush.
  • Take plenty of water and remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes after taking the tablet. Do not lie down.

Missed Dose

  • If you miss a dose, take it the next morning.
  • Do not take two doses on the same day. Continue the weekly schedule.

Overdose

  • If you take more than the recommended dose, contact your doctor immediately.

Monitoring During Treatment

Your doctor may monitor:

  • Bone density
  • Biochemical bone markers
  • Serum calcium and vitamin D levels
  • Height, weight, and chronic back pain
  • Serum alkaline phosphatase and pain in Paget’s disease
  • Femur fractures in patients with thigh pain

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to alendronate or any component of the formulation
  • Esophageal abnormalities (e.g., stricture, difficulty swallowing)
  • Inability to sit or stand for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication
  • Low blood calcium
  • Renal failure with creatinine clearance <35 mL/min
  • Recent bariatric surgery

Warnings and Precautions

  • Take calcium and vitamin D supplements as advised by your doctor during therapy.
  • Inform your doctor if you have swallowing, digestive, or mineral absorption problems.
  • Use with caution in patients with kidney disorders.
  • Report symptoms of low calcium (muscle cramps, numbness/tingling, seizures) immediately.
  • Long-term use may increase the risk of jaw osteonecrosis, especially in patients with cancer, dental problems, anemia, coagulation disorders, poorly fitting dentures, dental surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Report severe pain in the thigh or hip.
  • Report chest pain or difficulty swallowing.
  • Report sudden fever or chills.
  • Report sudden bone, muscle, or joint pain.

Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

  • Consult your doctor before taking alendronate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Use during pregnancy should be under medical supervision, weighing benefits versus risks.

Side Effects

Possible side effects (not everyone experiences these):

  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, nausea
  • Peripheral edema
  • Chest pain or burning sensation
  • Joint, bone, or muscle pain

Drug Interactions

  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking alendronate with other medications or supplements.

Packaging

  • Each package contains 4 tablets (1 blister pack of 4 tablets).

Storage

  • Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Use before the expiration date.
  • Keep in the original packaging until use.
