Medrolin®

Generic name: Methylprednisolone Succinate

Dosage form: Lyophilized powder containing 500 mg Methylprednisolone succinate for preparation of injectable solution

Therapeutic class: Systemic corticosteroid

Indications: This medicine is used in allergic, inflammatory, hematologic, skin, gastrointestinal, rheumatic, autoimmune, and nervous system diseases.

Medrolin® is a corticosteroid drug that reduces inflammation through multiple mechanisms.

Medrolin® is used for:

  • Various allergies, asthma, and chronic lung diseases
  • Different inflammatory, hematologic, skin, gastrointestinal, neoplastic, rheumatic, autoimmune, and nervous system disorders
  • Blood disorders and malignancies
  • COVID‑19 (Coronavirus) in hospitalized patients
  • Organ transplantation
  • Severe and resistant nausea and vomiting in pregnancy
  • Thyroid eye disease (exophthalmos)

Lyophilized powder containing 500 mg Methylprednisolone succinate for injectable solution.

Medrolin® is compatible with the following solutions for reconstitution and infusion:

  • 0.9% Sodium Chloride
  • 5% Dextrose

Medrolin® can be administered as intramuscular injection, intravenous injection, or intravenous infusion.

Administration requires careful and regular medical supervision during initiation, throughout therapy, and when discontinuing the drug.

The dose and schedule depend on the disease and patient response and should be determined by a specialist physician.

For high doses, the infusion should be administered over at least 30 minutes.

Each vial is for single use; unused portions must be discarded.

Before starting treatment:

  • Hepatitis B screening
  • Monitor blood pressure, weight, electrolyte levels, serum glucose, bone density, and creatine kinase
  • In children, monitor growth and development
  • Check for infection or suppression of the hypothalamic‑pituitary‑adrenal axis
  • For patients exposed to tropical climates or with unexplained diarrhea, screen for amebiasis
  • In latent tuberculosis patients or those reacting to tuberculin tests, check for reactivation

For long‑term use (>6 weeks):

  • Regular eye examinations, including intraocular pressure assessments

Do not use if the patient has:

  • Allergy to Methylprednisolone or any component
  • Systemic fungal infections or untreated infections
  • Intrathecal or epidural injection routes
  • Concurrent administration with live or attenuated vaccines
  • Use in premature newborns
  • Intramuscular injection in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
  • Active herpes eye infections, smallpox, or chickenpox (exceptions only for short‑term or emergency use)
  • History of toxic hepatitis from Methylprednisolone
  • High‑dose use for head trauma, optic neuritis, sepsis syndrome, or systemic sclerosis
  • During treatment, consider increasing intake of vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin D, folate, calcium, and phosphorus
  • This medicine suppresses the immune system and increases infection risk; practice good hygiene and avoid contact with people with respiratory infections
  • Report signs of infection (fever, chills, sore throat, ear pain, cough, sputum) to your physician
  • Notify your doctor if you develop fever, infection, physical injury, or require surgery
  • Inform your doctor if you experience mental health changes (depression, mania, insomnia, mood swings)
  • If symptoms of high blood sugar occur (e.g., confusion, unusual thirst, frequent urination), consult your physician
  • Report rapid weight gain in abdomen/back of neck, “moon face,” or severe headache
  • Drug must be used with caution in patients with heart, liver, or kidney failure, hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders, past stroke, or seizure history
  • In elderly patients, use the minimum effective dose for the shortest period

Before using Methylprednisolone succinate during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, consult a doctor or pharmacist.

The decision to use this medicine should consider the disease, benefits to the mother, and potential risks to the fetus or breastfeeding infant.

Like all medicines, this drug may cause side effects in some individuals. Potential side effects include:

  • Increased sweating
  • Headache
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Elevated risk of bone thinning
  • Sternal infections and rare sarcoma
  • Allergic reactions
  • Injection site burning and redness
  • Muscle weakness and bone loss

Consult your physician or pharmacist before taking this medicine with other drugs or supplements.

Each package contains 1 vial of Medrolin®.

  • Store below 25 °C, away from light and moisture
  • Use by the end of the month on the expiration date on the package; do not use expired medicine
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Keep in original packaging until use
